Kansas State University was the first operational land-grant institution founded in 1863. Today it leads the nation in biosecurity and global sustainability research. The USDA National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) relocated to Manhattan, KS in 2023 and is located just one-half mile from Kansas State University’s Biosecurity Research Institute. Manhattan proudly supports this renowned hub focused on animal health, food security and public safety.

Fort Riley, “Home of the Big Red One” (1st Infantry Division), has a fascinating history in this region, having originally been established in 1853 as a military post to protect settlers as they moved westward. Today modern training facilities and ranges ensure the troops at this Army installation are prepared to deploy around the globe in support of our nation’s freedom. Fort Riley boasts abundant recreational opportunities and tremendous relations with surrounding communities, such as Manhattan and Junction City. We thank you for your service!!

Just eight miles south of Manhattan you can walk through the largest remaining area of native tallgrass prairie in North America. Tallgrass prairie once covered 170 million acres of North America but most has been transformed into farms, cities and towns. Today less than 4% of the world’s tallgrass prairie eco-systems remain intact, mostly located in the Kansas Flint Hills. Konza Prairie Biological Station is a native tallgrass prairie preserve operated as a field research station by Kansas State University focusing on research, education and conservation. Hike and explore three different trails throughout the Konza Prairie and surround yourself with the beauty of the Kansas Flint Hills.
