Storage Tips
Store like a pro with our helpful list of storage tips!
- Plan Your Space
Plan your storage space. Place those items that you may need to access often in the front. Allow for walkways.
- Take Inventory
Create an inventory of your stored items and keep it with you, in a safe place.
- Protect Your Belongings
Place a protective cover (plastic sheeting) on the floor under your stored goods to guard against dampness. Any concrete floor may become cold and damp.
- Be Careful
CAUTION! Do not store anything COMBUSTIBLE (i.e., paint thinner, gasoline, solvents, paint, etc).
- Think Outside the Box
Use plastic storage containers with lids (totes) for easy accessibility without the hassle of packing tape.
- Pack Efficiently
Fill boxes/totes fully; avoid overpacking or underpacking. Bulging boxes/totes tend to tip when stacked while underfilled ones tend to collapse.
- Label & Seal
List contents of boxes/totes on multiple sides for easy retrieval; seal boxes with packing tape.
- Stack Lighter Containers on Top
Stack lighter boxes/totes on top of heavier ones.
- Do Not Store Food
To prevent pest infestation, do not store food or food items, including pet foods.
- Dishes & Glassware
Wrap dishes and glasses individually in paper then pack in sturdy boxes or totes marked “FRAGILE".
- Large Pictures & Mirrors
Wrap pictures and mirrors in cardboard. Stand them on end.
- Use Drawers
Utilize furniture with drawers as extra storage space.
- Appliances
Some goods can be stored inside large appliances to conserve storage space.
- Secure Electronics
Place TV's, electronics and other valuables near the rear of your unit.
- Store Together
Store shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside each other.
- Removable Legs
Remove legs of tables if possible to save space.
- Stuffed Furniture
Store sofas on end to save floor space. Wrap cushions in plastic and place on top.
- Sharp or Heavy Objects
Avoid placing sharp or heavy objects on top of upholstered furniture.
- Cover Furniture
Place a lightweight dust cover, such as a bed sheet, over furniture.
- Mattresses
If you stand mattresses on their sides, prop them up so they stand straight. Otherwise, they tend to bend out of shape and become lumpy.
- Secure Your Unit
Use a good quality lock on your door.
